Cherwell Development Watch Alliance campaign to save the Green Belt north of Oxford

The Cherwell Development Watch Alliance (CDWA) is an association of five local groups formed in 2019 to challenge the building of houses on the Green Belt north of Oxford by the Cherwell District Council

We took this campaign through to Judicial Review but sadly our case was dismissed.

Plans now coming forward to build the 4,400 houses demonstrate that we are looking at a major extension of Oxford University to create a new campus with associated housing. Cherwell Local Plan Review and the Oxfordshire Plan 2050 are underway and may well result in more Green Belt being targeted for development.

CDWA continues to campaign and lobby against unnecessary and inappropriate development.

Our local action groups

Begbroke and Yarnton Green Belt Campaign (BYG)

Cherwell District Council want to build 4,400 houses, the majority on the Green Belt surrounding the villages of Begbroke, Yarnton and Kidlington. The largest number will be built on two sites between Begbroke and Yarnton. BYG is campaigning to save our Green Belt.

GreenWay Oxon

GreenWay Oxon represents golfers who use the North Oxford Golf Course. This thriving club is over a hundred years old but has the misfortune to be on land that is leasehold to Oxford University Colleges and close to Oxford Parkway train station which has high speed links to London.

Harbord Road Area Residents Association (HRARA)

Harbord Road sits beside Cutteslowe Park,  near Pear Tree roundabout. As Oxford City seeks to expand North the area is threatened by both the N Gateway development and the loss of Green Belt.  Residents oppose plans to develop the Kidlington Gap which separates Oxford from Kidlington.  These plans will encroach on the Cherwell Valley and mean the loss of the green lung and wildlife haven provided by the golf course.

Woodstock Action Group

The historic town of Woodstock is within West Oxford District Council but sits on the Cherwell District border of Cherwell. It faces an existential threat from development proposals from both councils. Cherwell's original Local Plan review proposed 440 houses adjacent to Woodstock. Although the Planning Inspector rejected the Woodstock site the town will still be adversely impacted by the massive developments proposed in the City's Green Belt.
